TIPS FOR BACKPACKING
1. CHOOSE A BACKPACKING ROUTE
You should keep these things in mind – How much time do you have? Distance? Time of year and weather that you going in? You should always plan multiple routes and options for various outcomes.
2. RESEARCH THE COUNTRY, ENVIROMENT, & CULTURE
Get any required vaccinations. Despite what you may hear in the media, travelling to most overseas destinations is just as safe as travelling around your local area – hundreds of thousands of people go backpacking every year without incident. However you do need to be more prepared and take extra precaution, after all you are in a foreign land and you should never forget about that.
3. HAVE AN EMERGENCY FUND
It is always a good idea to have an emergency fund no matter what you plan on doing. Anything can happen and you have got to be prepared for overseas medical bills or fines for example.
4. MAKE SURE YOUR PHONE IS LIBERATED
Personally I think it is a good idea to liberate your phone. You can buy a cheap chip literally anywhere and have your phone for emergency calls, or to keep in touch with any locals that you may meet whilst traveling.
5. PACK LIGHT
Don´t over pack! You will most likely be using the same couple outfits throughout your trip. Keep in mind that you are backpacking, do you really want to be lugging around a 100-pounds to each destination? Be smart and only pack necessary things. Don’t forget that you will need the extra space for food, souvenirs, and any other things you will find or buy along the way.
6. MAKE USE OF FREE TOURS
Literally what the title says. Take advantage because tours can be pretty expensive thing in some destinations. This is a great form to meet people too! Also, try to look for free museums, galleries, events, festivals, etc.
7. TALK TO PEOPLE
Don’t be shy! Meet others as much as possible because this is the best way to gather tips, information about future destinations, and possibly transport. If you are traveling alone, this could be a great possibility to meet a partner to travel or do things with!
Relax, have fun, and remember the most important thing – have no regrets!
